My first trip to Montana for fly fishing is over and I’m still stunned by the majesty of the scenery and the beautiful rivers. I caught this beautiful Montana Bull Trout, my first one ever. I didn’t even know what it was until my guide educated me. This fish is a char from the Salmonidae family and is native to northwestern North America. It was classified as the same fish as the "Dolly Varden" but was then defined as a separate fish in 1980. You can’t attempt to fish for them directly because they are listed as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Bull trout are endangered because they require very cold water and very low amounts of silt to reproduce, both of which are negatively impacted by road building, logging and dams. Thus, their population is a good water quality indicator for the DNR too. This was of course an accidental catch while we went for cut throats, white fish, rainbows and browns. We kept the fish in the water the entire time, and very quickly released it. These fish get crazy big and are very aggressive.
